I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and Media Studies at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (Spain). My work focuses on journalism and the civil sphere. It interprets developments at the nexus of social trends and movements, gender, migration, and journalistic culture and practice. My research adopts a cultural sociological approach in its examination of the media in the context of the independence of the civil sphere from other, more materially dominant, power spheres. Recent book publications include The Crisis of Journalism Reconsidered: Democratic Culture, Professional Codes, Digital Future (co-edited with Alexander and Breese, Cambridge University Press, 2016) and News Media Innovation Reconsidered (co-edited with Susana Herrera, Wiley, 2021). My research has appeared in American Journal of Cultural Sociology, European Journal of Communication, Media, Culture and Society, Journalism, and Journalism Studies, among others.
Trained as a journalist, I turned this expertise to my decided advantage – as I have used media studies to analyse key cultural and symbolic, meaning-making processes in contemporary times, especially as they relate to power. Thanks to a competitive grant from the Spanish Ministry of Education, I was a long-term visitor at Yale University at the Centre for Cultural Sociology in 2011. I continued to be in touch with scholars at Yale and over the last five years, I have worked closely with social scientists there. I organized and co-edited The Crisis of Journalism Reconsidered book project (Cambridge UP, 2016). During two-year period, I wrote many evaluations and instructions to leading journalist scholars in Europe and the USA. The long process involved a multi-day conference and massive revisions of a dozen chapters. My own empirical contribution to that book (I also co-authored the Conclusion) is a case study of the media in New Orleans, based on primary research I made in that city. The book has been very well reviewed by leading journals in the field such as European Journal of Communication and Journalism, and my own empirical contribution rightly noted.
As a result of this positive experience, I was invited to work closely with sociologists Jeffrey C. Alexander (Yale University) on a series of projects related to the sociological study of democracy, the media, and the civil sphere outside of the Western world. I contributed to a chapter in the volume The Civil Sphere in Latin America, which has been published with Cambridge University Press. The chapter consists of an investigation of the anti-femicide movement in Argentina, #NotOneLess, initiated by social media and journalists in Buenos Aires. I have been working, with a Norwegian co-author, on several publications on journalism, civil sphere, and radicalisation. One of our contributions was awarded with the 2019 European Journal of Communication prize for the best article of the journal’s issues published in 2019.
